Feds: Calif. Man Ran Student Visa Fraud Ring (Associated Press)
"[Eamonn] Higgins, of Laguna Niguel, was charged Monday with operating a ring of illegal test-takers who allegedly helped dozens of Middle Eastern nationals obtain U.S. student visas by passing English-proficiency exams for them -- and then helped them hold onto those visas by taking college courses, passing finals and writing term papers in their names," the Associated Press reports. "The allegations outlined in court papers reveal a potentially dangerous security breach in the country's student visa system and underscore the vulnerability of a tracking process that relies on schools and testing centers to verify the identities of people taking the mandated exams."

College Experience Becoming Family Affair
As the number of returning and adult students continues to grow in an economy where advanced skills are necessary to not only land a good job but keep that job, it was only a matter of time when we’d start seeing more students in school at the same time as their parents. We’ve already written about growing community college enrollment . The numbers speak for themselves—nationwide, full-time enrollment at community colleges is up 24.1 percent since 2007, with overall community college enrollment increasing 16.9 percent over the same period, according to the American Association of Community Colleges. Many of those enrolled are returning adult students who want to amp up their skill sets or start on a path toward a new career, perhaps due to a recent layoff or desire to go into a more desirable field. Community colleges have also always been an affordable option for traditional students either looking for a two-year start before transferring to a four-year university, or a two-year associate’s program that will get them out onto the market faster

Student Veterans Finally Receiving GI Bill Benefits
Most of the student veterans who had been affected by numerous backlogs and delayed payments of their Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits have finally received those funds, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs office. The payments came at a critical time, as not only the students but colleges began to worry whether their military populations would be able to afford tuition at the schools this spring semester. The Post-9/11 GI Bill , which went into effect August 1 , offers expanded education benefits to veterans who have served their country since 2001.
