"Eastern Michigan University officials hope an 11 percent increase in the financial aid budget will do two things -- boost enrollment and attract students from a wider geographic area," AnnArbor.com reports. The Fine Print on Student Loans (Wall Street Journal)
"Recent changes in federal law have made student loans easier to get, and spikes in tuition costs have made them all but necessary for the average family. Many personal-finance experts see them as a 'good' debt, the type of borrowing that strengthens your financial position over time," the Wall Street Journal reports. "Good or bad, for college students just graduating into a tough job market, student loans represent a significant financial burden -- and a heavy legal one as well."

Allan W. Purdy, the founding president of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA), died at age 96 yesterday afternoon after suffering a stroke on Sunday. Purdy dedicated his life to removing financial barriers to higher education and the awards and scholarships that are named after him are a testament to his hard work and dedication to this purpose.
