Which Institutions Are (and Are Not) Required to Provide a Net Price Calculator?

With the net-price calculator (NPC) deadline just over one year away, questions have risen as to which schools are required to provide a calculator on their website. Any postsecondary institution must provide a NPC on its website if it participates in Title IV student aid programs, according to the Higher Education and Opportunity Act of 2008 (HEOA). However, the definition of net price only uses data for first-time, full-time (FTFT) students. Schools without FTFT students are exempt by default. This means that institutions with only graduate and professional students do not have to provide a NPC, according to U.S. Department of Education guidance.

"'It's important to have metrics that actually and accurately gauge how these institutions are progressing in terms of meeting their multiple objectives and also prioritizing them appropriately' [Assistant Secretary for postsecondary Eduardo Ochoa said]."

Utah: New Website Seeks Input on Higher Ed’s Future (Salt Lake Tribune)

"Utah System of Higher Education officials unveiled a new website this week, www.higheredutah2020.org, designed to act as an 'online public hearing' on proposals to help meet Utah's future workforce needs," the Salt Lake Tribune reports. "The goal is to help the State Board of Regents develop a plan to make sure 55 percent or more of Utah's workforce earns at least an associates degree or higher by 2020 and at least 11 percent earn postsecondary certificates."
