Delaware State Agrees to Settle Title IX Suit

Delaware State University agreed on Friday to settle a class action over women's athletics. The News Journal reported that the university committed that by 2013 it would add enough women's sports to meet the proportionality test for demonstrating compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Under that test, the proportion of female athletes should substantially mirror the proportion of female undergraduates at a college -- and Delaware State is way off. Currently, the university's student body is 61 percent female, but only 41 percent of athletes are female.

Florida: University of Miami Provides Paid Fellowships For Unemployed Graduates (National Law Journal)

"Recent graduates of the University of Miami School of Law are getting some added assistance in the job arena," National Law Journal reports. "The law school has announced a public interest fellowship program, called Legal Corps, that will place unemployed graduates with a variety of employers for six months."

State University Criticized Over Pro-Democratic E-Mail

Republican leaders in North Carolina are criticizing Winston-Salem State University after its office of student affairs sent all students and employees an e-mail, drafted by a student, urging support for Democrats in November's election, The Winston-Salem Journal reported. University officials said that an official did not review the student's e-mail before sending it out, and that it was a mistake to forward a political message of that nature to everyone at the university. The university has apologized and sent out an "equal time" e-mail on behalf of Republicans.
