High Schools in 8 States to Offer Early Graduation Plan
Public high schools in eight states will introduce a program next year that will allow their high school sophomores to test out of their junior and senior years if they are interested in enrolling in community college early. The program is the brainchild of the National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE), and was announced Wednesday. Those who do well on the tests, which will be called “board exams,” but aren’t interested in going to a community college will be able to continue taking college prep courses at their high schools to prepare for filing applications to the selective schools of their choice. Those who fail the exams will be eligible to retake them at the end of their junior and senior years. According to the NCEE, the program’s goals are to reduce the number of college students in remedial courses, and to better prepare high school students for campus life and the rigors of academics at institutions of higher education. Today, nearly half of the students in community colleges take one or more remedial courses and many are never able to complete developmental courses and move on to credit-level courses to complete their college degree, according to the NCEE.

8 States Join Effort to Spur College-Level Work in High School
High schools in eight states have agreed to participate in a project aimed at using a system of "board examinations" to get high achieving students to do college-level work as early as 10th grade, the National Center for Education and the Economy announced Wednesday . Under the plan, which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, high schools in Connecticut, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont will give volunteering students one of a series of exams (such as ACT’s QualityCore, the College Board’s Advanced Placement exam, or Pearson/Edexcel’s IGCSE and A-level programs) near the end of 10th grade, and those who pass will earn a high school diploma and the chance (if they choose) to enroll in any open admissions college in their state the following fall. Students can also opt to stay in high school and take courses designed to prepare them for admission to a selective college. Students who fail the exam will be prepped to help them pass it the next time they take it. “By introducing these Board Examination Systems in pilot high schools in these states as early as the 2011-2012 school year, we will begin a process that will ultimately prepare dramatically more students for college success and greatly reduce the high number of students who now take remedial courses in college,” said Marc Tucker, president of the national center.

Richard Herman has withdrawn as a candidate to become the next president of New Mexico State University, The News-Gazette reported. Herman's status as a finalist had raised eyebrows as he recent resigned as chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign amid a scandal over admissions preferences for politically connected applicants.

Athletic Woes at U. of New Mexico
The athletics department at the University of New Mexico is spending a lot of time on physical altercation issues. On Friday, the university announced that it was moving control of personnel issues previously handled by the department to the university's central human resources department, the Associated Press reported. The announcement follows the university's admission of mistakes in investigating claims by an assistant football coach, J.B. Gerald, that he was punched and choked by the head coach, Mike Locksley. In women's athletics, the university has suspended a soccer player who was seen in a widely viewed video colliding with her opponents from a Brigham Young University team and yanking the ponytail of one BYU player such that she fell to the ground, the AP reported.
