Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson Violated Rules, Steered Scholarships to Relatives (Dallas Morning News)

"Longtime Dallas congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson has awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarships to four relatives and a top aide's two children since 2005, using foundation funds set aside for black lawmakers' causes," the Dallas Morning News reports. "The recipients were ineligible under anti-nepotism rules of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which provided the money. And all of the awards violated a foundation requirement that scholarship winners live or study in a caucus member's district."

Congresswoman Accused of Nepotism in Scholarship Awards

U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, a Texas Democrat, awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation to four of her relatives, and two children of a top aide, The Dallas Morning News reported. The foundation provides funds to to members to give out as college scholarships, and while there are relatively few requirements on the awards, there is an anti-nepotism rule that was violated. Another rule that was violated in all of the awards is that those receiving the funds need to live in the districts of the caucus members giving out the money. Johnson told the Morning News that she violated these rules "unknowingly" and would "rectify the financial situation."

West Virginia: Financial-Aid Foul-Up Still Stings at State (Charleston Gazette)

"Some West Virginia State University students are still upset because they have not received financial aid money, but university officials said they are only abiding by proper rules in disbursing financial aid," the Charleston Gazette reports. "[S]tudents and parents called Wednesday to complain of financial aid problems after Sally Burger, the school's interim director for student financial assistance, said in Wednesday's Gazette that she hoped the problems were remedied after 26 students had been temporarily dropped from their classes. Beyond those 26 students, Burger said Wednesday, students who did not turn in their Free Application for Federal Student Aid [FAFSA] and related documents by June 30 are 'not going to get their money real quick.' Burger, who started in February, said she's strictly enforcing university, state and federal rules that had been loosely adhered to in the past."
