GAO Releases Report on Incentive Compensation Violations

The General Accountability Office (GAO) yesterday released a report to Congress on the Department of Education’s enforcement of the incentive compensation ban in light of the 2002 safe harbor regulations. Information on Incentive Compensation Violations Substantiated by the U.S. Department of Education analyzes data, program reviews, and audit reports related to the incentive compensation ban from January 1998 - before the safe harbor provisions were in effect - through December 2009. It details the number of violations substantiated by the Secretary of Education since 1998, the nature of these violations, and the names of the institutions involved.

Iowa Bars Porn Film

The University of Iowa has canceled a student-run theater's planned showing of a pornographic film this weekend, The Iowa City Press-Citizen reported. A spokesman said: "It is clearly not in the public interest for a public facility at a public institution to be showing a film of this nature. If showing the film were essential to an educational objective, the situation would be different. The intent in this case was to provide entertainment."

Requesting Status Information Letters from Selective Service

Selective Service is currently receiving an unusually large number of requests from schools for Status Information Letters. This increase in the number of requests has caused a significant backlog in Selective Service System processing. Selective Service has researched the nature of these requests and has determined that the requests are primarily from schools asking for verification for specific student aid applicants who are not required to register with Selective Service. This announcement is an important reminder of when Status Information Letters are not required.
