Federal Work Study: Making It Work

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is the place where federal aid requirements, employers' needs, students' schedules, and human resources laws all converge. At best it's an administrative headache; at worst, students can miss opportunities for meaningful jobs and lower debt. An Innovative Approach to Work-Study, a recent Transcript article by Gayle Dohrman Young, describes how Central Washington University took control of their FWS program to provide better service, connect students with more career-related jobs, and make the program more manageable.

West Virginia: Shepherd Gets $1.1 Million Grant (Herald-Mail)

"Shepherd University has been awarded a $1.1 million, five-year renewable grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Student Support Services TRIO program, the school announced Thursday," the Herald-Mail reports. "The goal of the Student Support Services program is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants. Shepherd will receive $220,000 in annual funding for the program, according to a news release."

College seminar program suspended pending review

The Dean’s Office is not accepting applications for spring 2011 college seminars while a committee of residential college masters, deans, faculty members and students reviews the program for the first time in a decade.

Civil Legal Assistance Attorney Student Loan Repayment Program for Fiscal Year 2010

This notice implements the Civil Legal Assistance Attorney Student Loan Repayment Program authorized by the HEA. The Secretary announces the requirements, definitions, eligibility criteria, and procedures for the implementation of this loan repayment program. Under this program, civil legal assistance attorneys who meet certain qualifications may have a portion of their federal student loan repaid by the Secretary based on qualifying full-time employment for at least three years. This program is intended to encourage qualified individuals to enter and continue employment as civil legal assistance attorneys. Congress has appropriated $5,000,000 for the program for FY 2010.

U. of Florida’s Support for First-Generation Students: Helpful, but Pricey (Chronicle of Higher Education)

"[Brandon] White was part of the first group of students in the Florida Opportunity Scholars program, which the university created in 2006 to support first-generation, low-income students. The university was hoping to increase not only socioeconomic, but also racial, diversity," Chronicle of Higher Education reports. "Offering the scholarships was -- and is -- an expensive proposition. And, like similar programs at other flagships, the financing is in constant flux as the university pieces together federal, state, and institutional aid. ... All told, university officials expect about 60 percent of the first group of scholarship recipients to graduate within four years (final figures won't be calculated until August)

All readings begin at 7:30 p.m., and are hosted in the Founders Room of Pine Manor College, 400 Heath St. Copies of the authors books will be available for sale after all readings, and there is plenty of free parking.

DepEd, CHEd to integrate voters’ education to HS, college curricula

The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) are set to integrate voters education program into the high school and college curricula after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced its plan of incorporating the program to educate the public on the elections and to strengthen the electoral process as a whole.
