Connecticut: With Financial Hardship at Home, More Students Seek College Aid (Connecticut Mirror)

"Like public and private schools across the nation, UConn is seeing a surge of applicants for financial aid, including many whose families have lost jobs or homes during the nation's deep economic slump," the Connecticut Mirror reports. "UConn started the emergency fund last year and will keep it for the coming school year in addition to its regular student aid budget. More than 250 students qualified to receive grants averaging nearly $4,000 apiece from the fund in its first year."

The Secretary announces deadline dates for the receipt of documents and other information from institutions and applicants for the Federal student aid programs authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act for the 2009-10 award year. Deadline and submission dates are provided in tables A, B, and C at the end of this notice.

State Audit Cites Shortcomings at N.J. Student Aid Agency

New Jersey's student aid agency may have violated state ethics laws, misinterpreted executive orders on political contributions and other matters, and was governed by a board that was denied crucial information about its operations, according to a highly critical state audit released Tuesday. The state's inspector general's office said in its report on the audit that it had referred the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority to the state ethics commission for a possible inquiry into the "solicitation of a donation from a vendor of the authority by an employee."

Wisconsin: Milwaukee School Operator Charged With Education Loan Fraud (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

"A high school diploma mill operator in Milwaukee has been charged with federal education loan fraud on accusations he collected more than $108,000 in student aid from the U.S. Department of Education, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court," the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
