More College Students Enrolling in Summer Sessions

As the weather grows warmer and spring semester grades are announced, many college students have little on their minds beyond relaxing poolside until the fall semester. Some students, however, won’t be getting much of a break, taking classes right through the season in what admissions officials say may be record numbers. An article in Inside Higher Ed today reports that at schools across the country, summer enrollments are up, following suit after a year of increased enrollments and admissions competition across the board. Why the bump?

Judge Rules U. of Wyoming Must Let Ayers Speak

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the University of Wyoming to let William Ayers speak on the campus today -- and to reverse a decision to bar him from appearing. The university originally cited political controversy over Ayers, a University of Illinois at Chicago education professor who is controversial because of his one-time role as a leader of the Weather Underground. Judge Says Threats Don’t Justify Banning Speaker

A federal judge in Wyoming said at a hearing Monday that a public college cannot justify barring a speaker from campus solely because of threats of violence, The Casper Star-Tribune reported. The comments came in a hearing on a suit challenging the University of Wyoming for calling off a visit by William Ayers, the one-time Weather Underground leader who has gone on to a career as an education professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. University leaders originally cited the political uproar in the state over the invitation to Ayers, but have since changed their argument to say that they were concerned about threats. Advocates for academic freedom have generally argued that colleges should respond to such threats with heightened security, and that calling off visits by speakers effectively rewards those who make threats.
